Billie Jean King Cup gives every team's coaches live AI match insights
1,500+Context (data volume): more than 1,500 stat combinations generated live from 300,000+ tracking data points per match (BJK Cup, Sep 2025); Microsoft's 2026 story counts 700,000+ points once player positioning is included, with answers in under two seconds in load tests. Captains, including the USA's Lindsay Davenport, say it supported in-match decisions. No usage, adoption or win-rate figure is published.
“During each match, Microsoft Azure processes over 300,000 data points from multiple sources, instantly generating more than 1,500 unique statistical combinations.”
- Who
- World Tennis (the ITF until 25 June 2026), organiser of the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge, the women's World Cup of tennis, with Microsoft (BJK Cup technology partner since 2020) and its partner Valorem Reply, which built the Match Insights app.
- Problem
- The Billie Jean King Cup is one of the few elite events that allows on-court coaching, and coaches often have less than 30 seconds between points. Match insights used to arrive hours after play. With 140-plus nations competing, some teams bring full analytics staff while others rely on intuition alone.
- Agent
- Match Insights pulls ball-tracking, player-positioning and scoring feeds into one validated model. AI models surface patterns such as serve placement, rally tendencies and momentum shifts in live dashboards. A Copilot layer (Azure OpenAI via Azure AI Foundry) lets coaches and players ask tactical questions in their own language and get an answer from the match data. Access is role-based, so only approved team staff see their match intelligence. The captain and coaches read the insight and decide what to tell the player.

Try it yourself with Microsoft Match Insights app
You are the performance analyst for a tennis team or club. Goal: turn our match data into three to five clear tactical cues a coach can use between points or at a changeover. My input: [match stats or a point-by-point log], [the opponent's recent results or known patterns], [our player's game plan]. Give me: 1) the three patterns that matter most, each with the number behind it; 2) one simple cue per pattern a coach can say in under ten seconds; 3) what to watch for if the pattern changes. Use only the data I give you, say when a sample is too small, and leave the final call to the coach. What we can do for your club or brand
Federations, team events and academies that already film or track matches can give coaches the same kind of help at their level: the tool sorts the data and answers questions, the coach decides. The Court can turn that into a sourced public case and the content that shows players, members and sponsors how the data is used, without inventing results that are not published.
What they did
World Tennis (then the ITF) and Microsoft built Match Insights for the Billie Jean King Cup, with Valorem Reply handling ingestion and the app. It unifies Hawk-Eye ball tracking, player positioning and scoring, shows live dashboards on serves, returns, hit points and court coverage, and since 2025 lets coaches ask questions in plain language through Copilot. For the 2026 Finals it moved to a web app with player-level doubles data and finer filters for pressure moments, rally length and serve side.
How it went
Per the BJK Cup site (Sep 2025), each match yields more than 1,500 stat combinations from over 300,000 data points. Microsoft's Sep 2026 story counts 700,000+ points per match with player positioning and reports answers under two seconds in load tests. USA captain Lindsay Davenport said real-time data 'meaningfully supported in-match decision-making'; Italy captain Tathiana Garbin said it 'supports tactical decision-making in a clear, immediate way'. Limits: data-volume figures, not outcomes; no published count of teams or coaches using it, questions asked, or effect on results.
